TANAH MERAH: A Felda settler had a narrow escape when a home-made bomb exploded as he was leaving the toilet yesterday.He believed his brother-in-law, a Thai, was trying to kill him. Idris Abdullah’s troubles began when he and his brother-in-law quarrelled over a piece of land early this yearHis four-wheel drive was set on fire, and his wife, Fauziah Yusof, was assaulted by her brother two months ago. Recounting the bomb blast, Idris, who lives in Kemahang Satu, said he was going to the toilet, located about six metres from the back of the house, when he spotted a black plastic bag."Shortly after I opened the toilet door to go back to the house, there was a loud explosion, followed by towering flames. I threw myself on the ground and screamed for help," he said.The bomb, weighing more than a kilogramme, contained gunpowder and one-inch iron nails. One of the nails grazed Idris’ left thigh. His sons, who rushed to the scene, found a 21-metre long wire which was fixed to the bomb, stretching into their orchard behind the toilet. "We found no one in the orchard, but I believe it was the work of my brother-in-law," Idris said.His brother-in-law, aged 31, is believed to have returned to his hometown of Narathiwat in Thailand. Idris said he did not report the earlier incidents to the police because he thought the dispute was best resolved between relatives."I was fortunate to have escaped the blast. But now, my wife and children’s lives are at stake. I don’t want them to get hurt," he said.Kelantan Criminal Investigation Department acting chief Superintendent Shafie Ismail, who was at the scene, said the case was classified as attempted murder. Shafie said the bomb was detonated manually by connecting the wire to a battery."It is believed that the Thai wanted to buy a 2.4 hectare plot of land, owned by his brother-in-law and his sister in Kuala Krai, but they refused to sell it. That may have caused the dispute," he said.

PENANG: Shrapnel from a homemade metal pipe bomb filled with nails and live ammunition and not an exploding switch box killed a 47-year-old man at Prangin Mall on Sunday.
State CID chief Senior Asst Comm (II) Syed Ismail Syed Azizan said more than 20 nails and four bullet casings were found scattered about 15m from where the bomb had exploded.
“Our investigations showed that the crudely-made pipe bomb was detonated with a delayed fuse. Someone lit the fuse and fled the scene a few seconds before the explosion on Sunday night.
“The bomb was either made with sulphur or gunpowder. Samples had been sent to the Chemistry Department to determine the actual substance used,” he said yesterday.
Yeoh Kok Siew, a clothing company staff, was killed when shrapnel from the bomb pierced his jugular, causing him to bleed to death during the 8.30pm incident.
He was about to enter a cafe to give moral support to his brother, who was taking part in a singing competition there.
The bomb was placed under a switch box, and the explosion left a 12.7cm-deep, 60cm in diameter hole.
SAC Syed Ismail told a press conference that the incident had nothing to do with terrorists, as anyone could have made such a bomb.
He said it was just like a meriam buluh (bamboo cannon) made by kampung boys.
“No subversive elements were involved in the making of the bomb as the explosives used were low impact. This is an isolated incident and is unlikely to happen again.
“The motive of the incident has yet to be determined but business rivalry has not been ruled out. It is very unfortunate that the explosion occurred during a singing competition,” he added.
The cafe has been operating since Prangin Mall opened its doors several years ago. Local bands usually entertain customers at the cafe, which opens till late at night.
Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, who was also at the press conference, said there was no cause for alarm as the situation was under control.
“I would like to urge the people not to spread or listen to rumours. The police will update the people through the media,” he added.
Dr Koh said the explosion was initially thought to be caused by a switch box fault but Tenaga Nasional technicians checked and found otherwise.

This little beast may be a little expensive but please consider the use of it in situations that seem priceless. :) Hey it's for my own perosnal protection for Pete's sake!

I bring it along for my usual evening jogs. Mostly to ward off dogs but yesterday seemed to be a very unfortunate day or is it? Please pardon my sadist self for today. Our topic is of course self defense.

I used it on some pesky dogs that were chasing me. Yes the dogs did squirm back to where they belonged but to my surprise, I was not aware of the wind that was blowing to my direction. You guess it. The spray was blown back to my face.

Now having pepper sprayed for the first time. It's one feeling that I'll never forget. It burns especially in the eyes and the only cure is by washing my eyes under cold running water for a good 10 minutes.

Lesson learnt: Never spray pepper spray against the wind. And by the way, you can reach your target as far as 2 meters.

My verdict; American Defender is the perfect legal weapon for yourself if you happen to come across the "evil".
